Q: What type of game
is Talos?
A: Talos uses concepts borrowed from the MUD genre, which simple put is a virtual world in which people may come together and adopt another persona and within that persona hunt out fame and fortune. We describe ourselves as a text-centric fantasy game.
Q: What can I do?
A: There are a vast plethora of options within the realms as this is not a simple hack 'n' slash game instead you can "craft" various objects, interact with various NPCs, go on a multitude of quests and generally immerse yourself in the realms and of course you can, if you so choose you can go and hunt down monsters but it is not advisable as this world is an extremely dangerous place for unprepared adventurers.
Q: Text based! Doesn't text based mean low quality?
A: Of course not, in no way does our text based approach mean we are producing an inferiour product. We instead like to think that we have an advantage as we don't have to keep up with modern graphics technologies and instead can simply concentrate on producing excellent quality content. Just as books weren't phased out with cinemas or televisions we also will not simply fade away due to the next "exciting new" graphics gizmo.
Q: Is roleplaying heavily enforced?
A: Roleplaying your character i.e not speaking out of character is something we believe should be emphasised but not enforced and policied. We simply state that players should attempt there upmost to maintain the illusion of a medievial fantasy world. For example, when talking using the "say" command we would like you to roleplay however, other channels are much open to out of character chatter although we will make sure there is no offensive language or otherwise unaccepable activity.
Q: High Fantasy?
A: High fantasy is the genre of fantasy which has a predominate magical theme. We do not in fact have much magically activity in the main cities and there are places where it is banned but with the inclusion of spell casters we felt it was an apt genre to put our game under.
Q: Realism?
A: We strive to strike the balance between realism and enjoyable gameplay. Combat is one area which is very gritty and somewhat realistic allowing for the possibility of blood loss or the loss of limbs.
Q: Do you plan to expand?
A: Of course! This is just the beginning as we progress and grow we will add weekly content after the completion of the initial phase of "live testing." We are currently searching for funding for the project so we can elevate to a whole new level whilst keeping the game entirely free of course!
Q: Game Engine? Technologies used?
A: For any people interesting the realms is coded in Java utilizing javascripts and a game specific scripting language to underpin events and npc interactions.
